The morning of May 24 consisted of a visit to Gyuto Monastery and Dolma Ling Nunnery, both beautiful places with wonderful views of the mountains. I think these places were the most peaceful places I’ve ever been to. At the monastery, we had a tour of the huge temple there, which was full of patterns and hundreds of Buddha statues. We could hear young monks in class chanting something excitedly as we walked around the monastery. At the nunnery, we saw a another smaller temple with a huge, incredible appliquéd tapestry of Buddhas at the front.
The Gyuto Monastery is where I first realized the endless knot motif was a very prominent design all over the Tibetan areas, in windows and gates, and painted on doors; it was everywhere. The endless knot is one of the Tibetan auspicious symbols.
The afternoon included a hike to Bhagsu waterfall and then an exploration of McLeod Ganj, a shopping area in the mountains.
