(Above) Taj Mahal.  The Taj Mahal was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan to house the tomb of his favorite wife.  Before she died in 1631, she made him promise to build something for her.  It is widely recognized as the “jewel of Muslim art in India.”  It is made out of marble.  The Taj Mahal has decorative elements such as carved relief work, patterns, calligraphy and inlaid jewels.
